January 29th '06, 06:00 PM
They sold 360,000 copies of there album in the first week. Good to know sheffield can still produce massive bands...
NATAL!E
January 29th '06, 11:18 PM
If you ask me, it did them A LOT of favours by doing it the way they did.
By releasing one or two really catchy songs, a while before their album was released, it get them into the public eye and noticed, so when their album came out, people wanted more, they wanted to hear what they could do.
A good way to get people to buy :D
-Snake-
January 29th '06, 11:24 PM
Alot of there "live" demo's got on the net, I downloaded them and thought "oh my god" how good would that sound proper not some crappy recording so I got the album, and they got a massive fan base beacuse of all the live shows they do!

problem with Arctic Monkeys is alot of people are jumping on bandwagon, personally in the area I grew up Indie has never really been the most popular thing, with stuff like rap and dance being the most popular!! but now Arctic Monkeys are top of the charts and all over the press, and just because there from sheffield many people around here have jumped on the bandwagon and bought there CD suddenly becoming fans of Indie. This actually really annoys me.

i know what you mean.
I dont usually mind so much about people who find a new type of music coz of friends and other influences from people close. But when they are just jumping on a bandwagon, it annoys me.

One or two of the guys that are in the Arctic Monkeys actually went to my old school (Stocksbridge High) dont know if they were there when i was there but i know that they went there (try saying that last bit 5 times, lol). And i still think they are blatantly 'meh', apparently they dont even speak as common as they do in the songs...

' And i still think they are blatantly 'meh', apparently they dont even speak as common as they do in the songs' What on earth does that mean?
And wow some o Arctic Monkeys went to your old school, honestly! living in sheffield you here a new 'im connected with arctic monkeys' story everyday. Everybody in fucking sheffield went to there school, was mates with them, went to a gig before they was famous and used to deliver papers to there house! Its unreal the amount of stuff like that you here everyday!
Chris
April 22nd '06, 09:54 PM
Alright, alright, calm down! LOL. I wasnt bragging or anything that they went to my school, i was just saying. I honestly couldnt give a flying fuck really, as i said before, i dont like them.
And when i said about the 'common speak' that they use in their songs i was talking about the way that they use broad yorkshire dialects in them, My AS english teacher says that she knew one of the guys parents and they were actually quite "well to do" (exact quote of what she said there) and didnt speak like that.

Well Im glad they do speak in a proper sheffield accents. Makes them stand out, gives them something different and its good for our area. There always refered to as the lads from sheffield, which is good for sheffield. they wouldnt if they sounded normal. Its the only famous people I can remember that speak in the sheffield accent and im glad of it. Well done lads, keep representing.

Argh, they are so overrated it's actually laughable. I bought their album after being recommended it by my mate, she said 'oh my god, like, they're the best thing ever!' so I bought it. It all sounds the same. Bland and boring.

Just did a search of 'Milburn' on TF and this came up.
Nat sent me 'Chesire cat smile' by Milburn other day, fell in love with the song and downloaded loads of their stuff. What a band.
On the Arctic Monkeys subject, they only have one song I like. Fake tales of San Francisco.

I don't think they're anything special. I like scummy and I bet that you look good on the dancefloor...and thats about it. They are ridiculously overrated. Good lyrics yes, but NME is so far up their arse it's irritating.

A lot of people like the Arctic Monkeys because they are popular but they are good. I was lucky enough to see them at the Octagon last year when they were on the NME awards tour, they dont say much but they play really well.
They are making their second album at the moment.
Milburn are very good, they are a bit less jokey than the Artic Monkeys. Little Man Tate are another good Sheffield band, they have a few demos out, Court Report and Man I Hate Your Band are both good songs.
Also, The Long Blondes have just released their album, theyve been around for 3 years just releasing singles, they are definately worth a listen. Once and Never Again and Weekend Without Makeup are both good.

Arctic Monkeys Release New Material Under Different Name
http://www.gigwise.com/artists/00016970_arctic200.jpg
Arctic Monkeys appear to have released a new single under a different band name.
The limited edition 7” vinyl by a band called Death Ramps has appeared on Domino Records website – the same label which is also home to the Sheffield band. A picture of the record, which features the songs ‘The Death Camps’ and ‘Nettles,’ is accompanied by a message which hints at the real source of the material.
“Unfortunately, we're not allowed to tell you the true identity of the Death Ramps but needless to say they're a band with A Certain Romance (wink, wink),” the message explains.
Fans of the Arctic Monkeys will already know that ‘Nettles’ has appeared on the bands setlist at a number of live shows throughout 2007. The vinyl is limited to 250 copies and is being issued on a first-come-first-served basis via the Domino website, here (http://www.dominorecordco.com/site/index.php?page=news).
