A Shanghai Uni student wanted to express his love for his sweetheart, so what did he do...
He gave chocolates to all the girls living in the University student apartments and asked them to turn their lights on or off at 8pm that night...

why not just say it to her face?

I'm quite glad he's not my boyfriend... he would receive quite a cynic-fest lecture on how not to waste money on pointless antics.
I don't believe it shows he "cares" either; just that he wishes to materialize love by an over-romantic and unrealistic gesture.

^ true.

August 17th '05, 03:37 PM
no i dont agree, i think saying it to the persons face is the best thing you can do but it seems to me as if hes doing it to tell the world how much he loves this person

I never said that wasn't his intention, just that one can't be certain unless knowing the background of the actual individual.
While it can be the act of a romantic, I can imagine a greedy and ambitious politican doing something relevant to that in order to cause a wealthy individual to marry him or her. You simply can't know for exact.
Mamfy
August 17th '05, 03:48 PM
well then why should we criticise until we know the facts?
Horatia
August 17th '05, 03:53 PM
I wasn't deploring him; I merely expressed my view that if I had someone accomplish that for me - I wouldn't find it to be that romantic, and that you shouldn't automatically assume he did it out of care when there are other possibilities.
Bob!
August 17th '05, 05:38 PM
True it kinda can be seen that way.
But the main point is, he went well outa his way an put himsen out, for her.
Whether it worked or not, its the thought that counts as he didnt do it for himself or any other reason then wantin to be with her.
Mamfy
August 17th '05, 06:33 PM
thats what i was getting across, he did it to please her, to show his love and affection for her, not for anyone else, for the one he loved
Bob!
August 17th '05, 06:38 PM
Yeah well I'm not commentin on whether it was a good or the right thing to do or not, thats up to his missuss really.
Mainly what I wa sayin wa its not just what he did, its why he did it, an the fact he had to go outa his way an put himsen out TO do it.
Whether it was good or not is a different thing altogether, that point at least should be recognised.

Maybe its ok for someone to say "i love you" to their face. That has meanin and is sweet.
but he may have just wanted to do something realli nice. i think its sweet myself..
it shows he cares as he took all the time and effort to make it work.
but it could mean just as much if you say it face to face!

Probably that is a very honorable culture. They probably believe that the honorable thing would be to show the most affection in any way they can.
Pity that the U.S. and China have to be enemies. We could learn a lot from them.

Perhaps you need to reread? The discussion wasn't about whether it was right or wrong, or whether it worked or not - it was that we can't be certain as to why he did it. For her? That would be the popular belief, yes... but there are alternatives, as I mentioned previously.
If one of us knew the individual then we could make an adequate analyzed report on who he actually accomplished that feat for, or 'why he did it' – but alas, we do not know him. I was raised around those who will attempt to impress others by expensive feats relevant to that; I know it’s not always love for the other individual.
Bob!
August 19th '05, 05:30 PM
Well were not exactly gunna phone im an ask im
But I do agree that summat shunt have a bigger impact just cause its more expensive, long as theres enough thought been put into it then it can easilly be on equal terms of summat that was based on money alone.

that is like soo cute wish someone would do that for me. but to do that shows the guy must really love that lass and have brains to make that work :)

August 20th '05, 04:14 PM
^ how does that prove it?
Oxide
August 20th '05, 08:09 PM
That's cute, although not something I would do. It must have taken a long time to plan and if the slightest thing went wrong I'd feel humiliated.
Saying "I love you" to their face is often the best thing to do, but if that Chinese guy likes to show it in a different way then more power to him.

i like it but it would have beeen a lot easier to tell her to her face. That's what i'd prefer. It takes a lot more guts to tell her to her face.
