I have this on going argument with people so i thought i'd carry it on in here.... I personally think "emo" kids are stupid, its just a label they call themselves which give them an excuse to cry! They moan about things which arn't important and "emotional rock" is just pathetic....
Im sure im going to get abuse for posting this thread but to be honest...i dont care!

A LOT of people say this. but nah, i dont think so.
You can say things similar about any subculture.
not all emos are constantly crying. its just a different style with its own type of music.

Bright Eyes, From First To Last, Funeral For a Friend, i'm not always crying, i cry when i have a reason to cry and i don't moan about things that aren't important so that shows you're wrong about emo people.

Not all emo's are lame spoiled kids who's life is the shit because their parents won't buy them a new porche. I get labled emo because of the music I listen to and the way I dress.

I'm kind of emo in some respects - the way I dress, some of the music I listen to.. etc.
I'm mostly a very happy person and like making other people laugh. It's not all stereotypical about the raz0r blades and crying. Some people use the stereotypical emo thing to the extremeties as with everything else. I think this strengthens the bond between the stereotypical emo figure, and the reality of emo.
Oh yeah, and some emo guys are soooo hot :D

i think emos are pathetic to be honest, its all attetion seeking, and to be frank (who's frank...?) the ones who say theyre emo but then contradict by saying they dont cry and dont cut themselves and all the other crap, well theyre just frauds! wanabee emos!
heres my argument against them, if a convo with someone who disagreed with the following statement in my screen name:
"holy mother of god; its an emo, they totally suck ass...run for the hills!"
from the convo:
i said: wats cool bout growing a fringe longer than the rest of the hair and brushing it casually to the side, then acting depressed all the time, wearing makeup, thinking self-harm is cool, getting off with guys and being the same as every mini-alt kid everywhere; all just to build up an image which they think is cool and want others to think is cool?

My brother calls me emo but I'm not the typical emo I guess. It's just because of the music I listen to!
I don't think all emos cut themself, I certainly don't becuase it doesn't get you anywhere but in pain! I don't cry at every little detail, I cry when it is necessary, and I don't moan about everything because you shouldn't moan about something that can't be fixed! I am normally a really bubbly person who likes to make people happy and make them laugh!
Just because the music I listen to is 'emo' doesn't mean I am the stereotypical emo dude!

September 17th '05, 12:03 PM
Gah. So I'm a 'fraud emo' because I dress simelarly to some of the emo fashion and listen to emo-tional music, yet don't do self harm, massive fringes or cry at everything?
I don't do self harm because it's silly. It's all pain and no gain. I'm not depressive so I have no need to release my anger and sadness in myself. Cutting my wrists would not solve any of my worries, I'm clever enough to know that.
My hair style is how I want it to be. I don't grow my fringe 'long' or pointy over one eye because that's not how I want my hair. Hair is a statement about that person, their personality and their style. Simple as.
I don't cry. Ever. Because for some reason I created a kind of emotional block inside myself. I can't cry.
So I'm not a stereotypical emo. I'm a mixture of things. But I don't go around telling people how much I cut my arms and cry and show off about it. People who do that are more likely to be the 'fraud emo' because they're most probably doing it for attention - And that's pathetic in my opinion.

Nat I totally agree with you!
Cutting yourself shows you have a serious problem but don't know how to cope with it! There are so many other ways of coping with things, and cutting yourzself is not an option for me.
I don't wear my hair with a massive fringe across my face because that is not my style, it is not me. I like my hair how it is, and I wouldn't change it.
I cry when I feel the need to cry, Not over stupid little petty things. Therefore I am emotional but not so emotional that the slightest thing would set me off.

Firstly everyone who listens to that music you seem to be classifying as an Emo.

Emos have been around for years. It's only now it's becoming so popular because of the 'pop' music scene.
Pop isn't all that crap. There's a lot of bands there too. Because they're promoting themselves, more people like them - hence more 'emos' or whatever.

Emo started in the early 80's...I think...not positive on that.
Emo's acutally used to be the underground punk kids. If you listen to some of the early emo stuff, it's really heavy. People keep changing the meaning of it, though.
Patriot1776
September 17th '05, 06:18 PM
I believe it actually started in the very late 70's (78-79) Often the early 80's was built upon things that hadn't quite made it in the late 70's but had a sudden surge of popularity during that 80's.
I am not absolutely sure though.

Initially, "emo" was an abbreviation for "emocore", short for "emotive hardcore", and was used to describe the music of the mid-1980's. But as you can tell, the word "emo" is now used to describe less hardcore music because pansys call them themselves "emo" and listen to The Used... the word now, has a slighty different meaning which isnt a good thing!

very true.
to name a few bands/artists i like:
The Sex Pistols (real punk)
KoRn (heavy (nu) metal - screamy)
The Beatles (60s rock n roll)
NWA (80s black gangsta rap)
Faithless (modern day dance)
Funeral For A Friend (emo, i guess...)
The Beach Boys (60s surfer rock n roll)
System Of A Down (heavy (nu) metal - screamy)
Blink 182 (punk rock)
Iron Maiden (old heavy metal)
50 Cent (modern day gangsta rap)
Simple Plan (puffy punk rock)
and i cant exactly fit in with all those stereotypes all at once (well i could never fit in with NWA lol :P)
just cos i like ffaf dont mean i slit my wrists.
just cos i like the sex pistols dont mean i wear leather and studs and have a mohawk.
just cos i like soad dont mean im a scary goth
just cos i like nwa dont mean i go round killing whites cos theyre white
i like music if i like it. if i dont like sumat, i just dont. i dont dress like these bands just cos they do, i wear watever i feel like, or is appropriate for wat im doing.

for gods sake....emo is short for 'emotional hardcore' which is the genre of music....a person who is sed to be emo is sum1 who listens to emotional hardcore and wears clothes that follow the fashion that the genre brings.....not the YOUR EMO IF U SELF HARM bullshit! its about the fashion in the music NOT the emotional stability of a person.

Disclaimer: In no way am I an emo hater, but this was way too funny not to post.
"I wonder when people will realize that the "scene" has become homogeneous. It's full of 14 year old girls with uneven bangs,
black and white striped shirts, and tattered low-top black Chuck Taylor’s, who swoon over homosexual kissing and pathetic
whiny lyrics and overuse the symbols.
Their favorite quote is, invariably, "The truth is you could slit my throat and with my one last gasping breath I'd apologize for
bleeding on your shirt" because it like, so totally describes their relationship with that one HAWT sophomore who totally
ripped their hearts out when they were like, SO in love with him.
Their favorite type of music is, of course, "emo, screamo, and hardcore", three terms which, in their minds, invariably include
the bands Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, and Hawthorne Heights.
Their AIM screennames often include x's, the words "electrikk", "disaster", or some play on their favorite song from their
favorite band, you know, the one they saw on MTV like a couple times, but shouldn't be on MTV because they're like, way too
emo for that.
They take hundreds of black and white pictures with way too much contrast of themselves looking plaintively down at the
ground, pointing a gun made of their fingers at their heads, or kissing the camera while displaying their expert application of
lip gloss around their labret piercing and the thick dark eyeliner that circles their eyes.
They embrace the "dork" that is inside their polished, fashionable exteriors by writing in their LiveJournals or Xangas about
how they and their friends had an 'N Sync sing-a-long at one of their sleepovers because, remember, 'N Sync is soooo not
popular anymore and they like, sooo wouldn't follow any of the fads of today, so they embrace the fads of yesterday.
They adore "retro fashion", meaning anything from the 80's, because they totally used to wear neon colors and big beaded
bracelets, even though they were born in, at the earliest, 1988 and remember jack shit about the fashion and culture of the
80's.
It's full of "emo boys" who often are difficult to differentiate from "emo girls", who have meaningless tattoos even though
they're 15, smoke a lot of cigarettes, drink a lot of hard liquor, and are in some shitty band that plays a couple of gigs in
someone's basement because they're "too cool to go mainstream" when really, they just suck.
They weigh roughly 90 pounds, wear girls' jeans that hug their asses in just the right places, belts buckled somewhere around
the side of their right leg, tight striped 80's style polo shirts or band t-shirts, and skater shoes, even though they don't skate
because that's soooo lame.
They write awful poetry about the dark abyss of their souls and how the gun is pointed at their heads, the trigger poised to
blast away the bloody memories of a failed romance. They cried when Blink-182 broke up, and they have a secret
obsession with Avril Lavigne because, like, she really IS kinda hot even though her music totally sucks.
They spend more time at the mirror than their female counterparts do, making sure that the long black shock of hair at the front
of their heads lies covering one eye just so, that their lip piercing is perfectly placed so that it looks hot when they kiss other
boys, that their pants are the right degree of tightness so as not to exude gayness.
Emo boys and girls often use the suffix "Xcore" to describe themselves, using a number of adjectives or nouns to accomplish
this task. This is a play off hardcore music, or "hXc". Some of these descriptive words include "fashionXcore", "retroXcore", or
even "yournamehereXcore."
This way of speaking is retarded or nonsensical to everyone else except those "in the scene", but it totally doesn't matter
because they're too nonconformistXcore for anyone to truly understand their "scene".
They couldn't name a Sunny Day Real Estate or Rites of Spring song if it came up and bit them on their Gap Jeans-clad
asses, and they claim to like the Smiths because Jesse Lacey of Brand New said they were cool.
Sure, they listen to some new "hardcore" bands, but they're all pretty much the same five bands:
1. Taking Back Sunday
2. Senses Fail
3. Thrice
4. Hawthorne Heights
5. Story of the Year
To these promising young firecrackers, music takes a backseat to fashion in their scene of choice.
Emo girls just want to kiss emo boys, emo boys just want to kiss other emo boys, and they all want to wear tight pants and
take lots of pictures of themselves. End of story. Because honestly? It's electrikk!"

Bob'll go mad if he sees that bisexual emo pic.. I think it'll be removed tbh.
And Ben, what you're describing.. Isn't stereotypical emo. It's more satanic, gothic and death obsessive. Emo's one if the gothic style ways, but suddenly anything and everything is labelled 'emo'.
Has no one noticed? It's exactly the same as the whole 'chav' shit. Everything remotely 'chavvy' is labelled, even if it isn't. The people are aswell. I mean, yes, I wouldn't be seen dead wearing a pair of trackie bottoms, but they're all labelled 'chavwear' too.
Given time this whole thing with most probably blow over. All those 'stereotypical' emo kids will move onto the next craze so they can be in with the stereotyped crowd. You'll find that every subculture has stereotypical values, but the people in that subculture aren't neccessarily like that. The same is with emo, like all the rest. However, there's the select few who dwell on the stereotypical stuff and think they're cool, when infect, they're just making people hate them, and making themselves look like idiots.

I am narrow minded when it comes to something I'm passionate about. I admit to it. I have NO shame saying that I am...but I'm not shallow...and believe it or not, I do have a pretty good grasp on what I'm talking about.
Look up the true definition of emo. You'll see what I mean. Emo isn't short for emotional...it's short for emotive-hardcore. A heavy type of punk with deep lyrics. It started in the early 80's and stayed underground for years. It's not this shitty acoustic stuff, or these bands who wear more makeup than my grandmother.

Moshes are the worst. Its just posh kids who want to be cool and they think being a moshes cool so they do that. I get called a mosher though
But to be honest, im not one. Im just someone who likes the so called "mosher" genre of music, and I go to gigs and play guitar and wear some black and stuff. But I listen to all sorts of music! I go to gigs coz they are great places to meet people, have a drink and a bit of fun and listen to bands play (the local ones anyway) and I play guitar because I have 2 guitars, I love guitars and music, and I have played since I was 8.
I dont like the stereotype "mosher". It fits too much of a wide range of people.
Anyone who listens to rock/punk or anything like that is classed as a mosher, and thats a lot of people. So called "moshers" who go along with that type of stereotype call anyone who isnt a "mosher" a "chav", and anyone who is a so called "chav" labels anyone else as a "mosher.
it doesnt make a lot of sense to me. Because its just labelling people, and splitting them up into 2 different groups who will never get along.
Im not being mean or calling you a chav or anything, i just hate the word "mosher"

Hers is a different type of emo.
Its the original type. Its ok to be the "new type". its a free country! people can dress how they like and should still be accepted. It really bugs me when people cant accept other people if they are a decent person just for the way they dress or the music they listen to. But the emo she is on about is the original one. Which dont seem to be anything like the new emo...

Emo is subjective, it is different to every person. In my eyes, emo is just a word, meaning emotional. But I also know emo music to as a general rule be about having someone lose you. And if I'm honest, I think that the funniest thing about emo music, is something my friend and I came up with when people were arguing about it one day, and it was basically this:
"This was originally going to be some pathetic poem about how everyone hates me and I wish I was dead, but my mate Brian had a guitar."
I am by no means saying that this is a definition of emo, because as I said emo is subjective, what I think is not what most of you will think.

its not like people laugh at metal heads .. its emos because they have more emotion and listen to more than screaming .. my big brother has metal stuff drummed into my head but i still lisen to other stuff .. emos dont just right poems or songs they have a life like everyone else so really lay of its gettin a tad gay now .. *rolls eyes*

I dont think people should laugh at them. If its what they want to be, then its up to them! It doesnt make them a bad person or anything. Im slightly emo I guess. People would say im a bit like that. Im just not fully like that.
I have nothing against them. Most of the time i stick up for them. Who should be hated for the way they dress and what they listen to as long as they are decent.
If you look around, Iv got loads of posts like this. =P *power to the emos!*

Uhm okay, welcome to me not judging emo's. My fiance used to be a major league emo, he's still somewhat emo, I used to be pretty bad, I'm not as bad now. So yeah, welcome to the joke there. It something me and my friend came up to make fun of extreme emo. As in cutters. And yes, I can make fun of that if I so desire. I can make comments on it.
As I say emo is subjective I'm not defining it, nor would I ever try to, thought I can define the word as emotional, because that is what it means. Take it how you will. But my experience in the matter does allow me to say things like that.

aww really .. *whispers back* but people you have to see Roddy .. no emo but damn fine .. i like looking around for hot boys hehe .. *gets angry* you may comment on it but make fun of it and comment on it is to complete opposite things .. so really it does mean emotional .. and saying extreme emo could include me so your "comment" is actually making fun of me and most of my frtiends ........

Haha, how random. But dont worry about it. Everyone has a thing about being against something. Dont let it get you down. Its nothing personal on you, and i can see it could be a bit offensive, just dont let it worry you :)
Haunting_Echoes
October 30th '05, 01:16 AM
That is not my fault, someone will always take offence from some comments, it's how life is. So blame me all you like, hate me all you like, it will have no impact, and it will not change what I think or feel. And I have every right to make fun of or comment on emo. I know what it is like, and I know what it is like to escape from the world of severe emo. I have. And you know what, it just shows character that I can look back on my mistake and laugh. I know what it's like to see someone suffer from extreme depression, deep emo. And I also know that my being able to joke about it helped. And I am not saying that it would help everyone, but I am speaking from my own personal experiences.

Yeah, it's nice to have someone who cares. I have never taken pills or drank alcohol in my life, so that would not have been an option for me, but I know what itt can be like... I only stopped really because of my fiance (then friend) because he cared so much, and he used to do the same. But we sort of came to an agreement that we would both stop for each-other... And we have.... Some things are too precious to risk something like that on. It's nice to know someone cares, because nobody even knew I was how I was before my fiance... He got through walls nobody, not even my parents or closest friends could break down.

Unfortunatly though, emo has become a fashion trend and not a state of mind now, it's not about being in touch with your emotions any more. It's about wearing converse and tight jeans..... That is the sad fact, people now either think of that when they hear emo, or they think of someone bi-polar or manicly depressed who cuts all the time and wishes they were dead.... I'm not saying that is right, but in this day and age, that is what emo has come to mean, it's no longer to do with emotions, so much as those two things. I also happen to know a few emo's... some are just in for that fashion trend and such, but some are truly in touch with their emotions, and they just wear the clothes because they like the style.

I still hide behind a lot of stuff. I'm not always me. But I let someone in, and that's what made the difference, if you let one person you trust in, you've got more confidence than you realise. It takes a lot of guts to allow someone into your life when you're down, or you just want things to stop, and not a lot of people realise that. It's not easy, but you just have to go with the flow. You're stronger than you realise. I used to and still do get bullied a lot over my being British and living in Ireland, and I used to just let it happen, it's as soon as you stop allowing them to be right, as soon as you stop allowing things like that to be right, that things get better. You have something some of your friends don't, experience, you know what it feels like to be you, to wish you weren't real, you know what it's like to wish you were dead, and you came through it, and in your case, that has made you stronger, you may not see it but it's true. There are good times and bad, and you came through some very hard times and you're still fighting, you're more confident than you realise. You just have to see it is all.

Yeah... I actually have profiles on so many sites, and the about me stuff is always strange, I kinda take my frustration out on random people, and it makes me feel better for people I don't know to understand who I am... you know. It's one of those things, if you can get it out there, it's less worrying in practice. I mean I wish I was pretty like my friends are, so I say it in profiles, and it doesn't bother me so much.

Bob!
November 29th '05, 05:58 PM
True, mostly it is other people who give the label, and thats why it is decided that all those traits are "emo".
Though whether they actually say it themselves or not, a hellova lot of them dress that way/do those things because they want to BE given a label or stand out/be recognised as part of a group.

its pathetic realli... all u end up with is people like chavs arguin and startin stuff with goths and things like that, i realli dont see the point... at the end of the day u are who you are and people shouldnt judge them for it.
