This is not going to be at all long winded but heres my opinion....
The best trilogy in my books has to be the original Star Wars Trilogy. Now some of you may argue that it is not a trilogy as there are now six films in total but the box sets that I won clearly state that the original 3 films are reffered to as the Star Wars Trilogy. :P
Anyway, I own the original videos for all 3 films (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi), the Special Edtion Video Box Set and the Limited Edition Gold DVD Box Set that was only available on sale in HMV for a period of around 3 months.
As amazing as I thought the original editions of the films were, they only got better when they got digitally remastered. The Lightsabers look better, so do the battles. The Space scenes and even the Battle cruisers have been improved, they look real now!
The Trilogy has been improved a hell of alot since its original release which of course amounts, in bulk, to the reason why I like the 3 films so much but the story line is awe inspiring too. I just love the fact that George Lucas depicted it as a 'Space Western'. - In old western movies the bad guys were dressed in Black while the good guys got a white get up, this was a basic principal Lucas used for Star Wars with the clothing for both Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. And if you are not that dim witted then you may have noticed that most of 'A New Hope' is set in the dessert terrain of the planet Tatooine, just like westerns! - But yeah, anyway, I love the remarkable likeness to an old shoot em up style western movie and the perfect mix of Sci-Fi that has been accomplished in the films.
I dont like the new 3 Star Wars films as much as I did the old ones, sure its nice to know how it came about that Darth Vader was the way he was and why Yoda was on Dagobah but it just seemed to me more like a rush for cash on Lucas' part. Although the visual effects are eye gaugingly stunning! :D
I dont think the Matrix was the best of Trilogies. The first film absolutely rocked and Keanu Reeves kicked ass (he did in the 3rd film too but meh :P, storyline seemed to improvised and the film was real slow at times.) but the 2nd and 3rd films were a real let down for me. Can't quite put my finger on exactly what it is but they just really seemed to drag and as cool as the action scenes looked, they did not really have any interesting twists and you can pretty much figure out whats going to happen. Big thumbs up on the effects for this trilogy though! :D
Now Lord of the Rings comes in a close second for me after Star Wars. I think we have alot to thank J.R.Tolkien and Peter Jackson for. A film written by one of the greatest Authors to have ever lived and directed by, in my opinion, the best director around right now. I think Peter Jackson is quickly taking over the status that Steven Spielberg held and LOTR shows this masterfully. If anyone does not like the LOTR trilogy then I think that they must be really narrow minded (no offense) because I cant think of one thing in the films that does not excite or interest me. Maybe people who dont like it just like romantic or comical films and dont switch on for LOTR because its not their 'thing'. Well the reason LOTR is my second fave trilogy is becuase it is a whole heap on genres bunged into one amazing collection of films. Gimly the Dwarf accounts for the comical area of the films. Frodo, Sam and Smeagle give it a little drama and the relationships that Aragorn has are the romace and I think its more than obvious where the action is! :P
In other words:
Star Wars = The Ultimate Film Trilogy of all time, period! :P
Matrix = Not so good trilogy in my books but ok if your into special effects and all that rigmoral.
Lord of the Rings = Nice work on this Trilogy, second fave of mine, stunning effects and a variety of stuff going on.

The barbie movies.
They're fucking mindblowing.
...I'm a fan of the LOTR series. Harry Potter is a close second, but that's just because I'm a really big dork.
Edit: I now realize that Harry Potter and Barbie aren't trilogys, but i dont' care.

I'd say Harry Potter are the best books, but the 4th was a real disappointment

I don't really mean to burst everyone's bubble, but "Rocky" isn't a trilogy.
It is comprised of five films, a trilogy can be no more than three.

I was thinking that! :P
Unless they meant 3 films ou of the five but I guess then its still not a trilogy casue more than 3 were made.
